It is reported that the supply of food to the inmates has also become a serious problem due to the increase in the prices of essential commodities.
Fifteen suppliers supply vegetables, eggs, meat, fish, spices, and dried food items to all prisons in the country.
Those suppliers say the price of food items has more than doubled.
Accordingly, the suppliers have requested the Prisons Department to increase the prices of food items supplied to prisons as a support for them.
The Department of Prisons says that the request of the suppliers has already been forwarded to the Ministry of Justice.
Accordingly, the Cabinet will make a decision regarding the increase in prices, the department said.
The daily allowance for food and drink for each prisoner is 300 rupees.
