The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) says that power cuts will be imposed today (19) if the required fuel for power plants is not received.
The power cut to the entire island commenced yesterday (18) due to the loss of 600 megawatts of generating capacity from the national grid due to disabling of 07 power plants without fuel.
Two fuel tankers carrying 70,000 metric tons of diesel and petrol are scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka today (19) and tomorrow (20), the Ministry of Energy said.
It is said that even though fuel is obtained for the power plants from the relevant ships, it takes about 10 hours to transport the fuel to the power plant terminal.
The Public Utilities Commission said that Rs. 250 million was obtained from a private company yesterday to purchase fuel.
The loan is due next Monday.
The Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission Janaka Ratnayake stated yesterday that the money is expected to be used to purchase fuel for the power plants.
In the face of the prevailing power crisis, power cuts were announced on two occasions from 2.30 pm to 10.30 pm under four categories as announced yesterday.
