Veteran journalist and lyricist Saman Chanchadranath Weerasinghe passed away today (15).
Mr. Weerasinghe was receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital due to an illness and was 74 years old at the time of his death.
Saman Chandranath Weerasinghe, who started his career as a journalist with the Lankadeepa newspaper, has worked for a long time in news including Dinamina published by Lake House.
He has also been the Consultant Editor of Dinamina for some time and has compiled a number of column letters for various newspapers.
He composed his first song for the late music scholar Neela Wickramasinghe and has composed a large number of songs since then.
He composed many music including Sandamadale Sita – Tharu madale Sita, Sondura Mata Samudenna, Sewwandiye, Hima rennu Watena Seethale, Sanduni, Nambara Goyamata Rahas Kiyala – Laa hiru Hinahe Kirana Halala, Kandan yanne Kawadada Maa, Waadakayanani Obe Sitharaya, Sirilak Derane, Gedara Budun Amma yayi Pawasu etc.
His composition ‘Sanduni’ also won the award for Best Sinhala Song at the 55th State Literary Awards in 2012.
The last rites of the late Saman Chandranath Weerasinghe will be announced later.
