It is reported that steps have been taken to close a section of the Northern Railway for five months from March 1.
During this period all trains will run only to Anuradhapura.
The 120 km northern road from Anuradhapura to Vavuniya will be closed for major upgrades.
The Sri Lanka Railways said the section would be upgraded to modern standards at a cost of US $ 92 million.
The Department stated that the main objective of this upgrade is to facilitate the movement of trains on the Northern Railway line in a convenient manner and shorter time.
On the Northern Railway, trains now run at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour.
After repairing this section, the train can run at a maximum speed of 100 km per hour.
This will enable trains bound for Jaffna to travel at maximum speed, providing safe, efficient, and comfortable transportation for passengers traveling to the Northern Province.
