It has been 17 years since the devastating tsunami that shocked the oceans misplacing 4,100 people, and killing 31,229 people.
December 26, 2004, is designated as National Safety Day to commemorate the victims of the December 26, 2004 tsunami disaster in Sri Lanka.
The main ceremony to commemorate them today will be held from 8.30 am to 10.30 am near the Tsunami Memorial in Hikkaduwa.
The tsunami affected 516,150 people in many parts of the world.
The tsunami affected 14 districts and the country lost tens of millions of dollars worth of public property and 250,000 homes in less than an hour.
