Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs has stated that the report on one of the two gas samples sent to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation for testing the composition of domestic gas cylinders has been submitted to the Head of the Laboratory Science Department at the University of Moratuwa.
He said samples would be taken from seven more districts today and sent to the Standards Institution to test the quality and composition of the gas cylinders.
He was speaking at a special media briefing yesterday afternoon.
In the last few days, there have been reports in several areas of fires related to gas leaks, which has caused controversy in the society regarding the contents of the cylinders.
Consumers are still skeptical and apprehensive about buying and using gas and in view of this problematic situation among the public, the Consumer Affairs Authority had taken steps on 26 to send samples of gas cylinders for sale in the Colombo area for laboratory tests.
The Minister of State stated in Parliament yesterday that it is possible to state that there was no explosion in the gas tanks according to the opinion of the Analyst’s Department and other institutions.
Several explosions were reported due to a gas leak at a restaurant near the Ratnapura, Alawwa, Weligama, Pannipitiya and Colombo Race Course.
