The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says Sri Lanka has imposed a travel ban on tourists from six countries.
Accordingly, Sri Lanka has banned foreigners who visited South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Swatin for the past 14 days.
A new species of Kovid named Omicron was first discovered in South Africa on November 24 and has also been identified in Botswana, Belgium, Hong Kong and Israel.
A number of countries have already banned or restricted travel to and from South Africa.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that the number of cases of this strain, originally named B.1.1.529, appears to be increasing in almost all parts of South Africa.
