Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Minister of Cooperative Services Marketing Development and Consumer Protection says that further rules will be imposed regarding the quality of gas within the next two weeks.
The government has also decided to test the composition of gases sold by Laugfs and Litro.
Accordingly, gas cylinders were sampled from several parts of the island to test the composition of the gas, he said.
The Consumer Affairs Authority has handed over the sampled gas cylinders to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation for inspection.
The Minister of State has instructed the gas companies to launch programs to make every household aware of the correct way of using gas.
Minister of State Lasantha Alagiyawanna stated this at a media briefing held in Colombo.
The cause of the gas accidents that have taken place in many areas in the last few days has created a rumor in the society that the cylinder explosions have taken place due to changes in the gas composition.
However, all the gas accidents were not due to the explosion of gas cylinders, but due to the negligence of the people, by gas leaks, the fires were caused, Senior Assistant Government Analyst Rushan Fernando told the media.
The Consumer Affairs Authority has issued a number of gazette notifications regarding the quality of LP gas used by the public. But there have been many gas accidents throughout history. On average, about 10 gas accidents a year are reported.
