An underworld criminal who was in police custody has been shot dead in Diyagama, Kalutara this morning while going to show his weapons.
Hewa Lunuwilage Lasantha a.k.a. Tinker Lasantha is a close follower of Makadure Madush. After the mysterious death of Makadure Madush in police custody, the perpetrator had approached the drug dealer who was a member of Madush’s gang called Harak Kata.
According to the police, he was involved in the recent shooting of Sunshine Sudda in Weligama, a close associate of Madush. It is said that the murder had been carried out under a contract given by a drug dealer named Harakata from Dubai.
The suspect, who was arrested by the Kalutara Divisional Crime Investigation Unit, had attempted to shoot at the police with a pistol found while he was on his way to show his weapons.
Two officers of the Kalutara Divisional Crime Investigation Division were also injured in the incident, police said.
