More than 20 people were drowned when a ferry was capsized in the Kinniya lagoon in Trincomalee this morning.
Kinniya Police said that the Navy and the Police Special Task Force launched a joint rescue operation at the same time.
The bodies of six persons, including children, were found drowned and seven others were taken to hospital.
Even school children have been traveling on this bridge ferry. Police say that search operations are underway to find other persons who were drowned.
It is suspected that the accident had taken place due to the overcrowding of the ferry.
