The cremation ceremony of the late Most Venerable Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thero will be held at 1.30 pm today at the Independence Square premises in Colombo with full state honors.
Chief Sanghanayake of the Malwathu Maha Vihara Chapter of the Maha Vihara Vamsika Shamopali Maha Nikaya in the Colombo Chilaw Division and the Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Most Venerable Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thero was passed away on the 28th of this month at the age of 84.
Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thera’s body is currently placed in the Vidyalankara Maha Pirivena in Peliyagoda and the procession carrying the body is scheduled to leave the Pirivena at around 12.30 pm.
Accordingly, the procession carrying the body will proceed to Kandy Road, Kelani Bridge, Baseline Road, Bandaranaike Junction, Orugodawatta Junction, Ingram Junction, Dematagoda Junction, Prison Junction, Borella Junction, DS Senanayake Junction, Horton Wijerama Junction, Horton roundabout, Nanda Motors junction, Independence roundabout and Independence Avenue and reach Independence square.
Police are urging the public to use alternative routes as there may be roadblocks during the cremation procession.
Accordingly, meat shops and liquor stores in the Colombo and Gampaha districts should also be closed.
