The government has decided to provide funds for the cremation of Covid from now on, said Roshan Ranasinghe, Minister of State for Local Government and Provincial Councils.
Roshan Ranasinghe said the cost of cremation for one Covid death is Rs.5000 and that it will be borne by the government.
Accordingly, the government has spent Rs. 12 million for 2417 Covid deaths up to August 31, he said.
Mr. Ranasinghe said that the money was spent on behalf of all local government bodies throughout the country.
He said that Rs. 5,000 each has been spent on Covid deaths – 488 in Sabaragamuwa province, 391 in North-Western province, 260 in Central province, 171 in Uva province, 537 in Southern province, 100 in North Central province, 399 in Western province, 71 in Eastern province etc.
