Ali Sabri, the Minister of Justice says that the number of detainees in the country’s prison system is currently two to three times that of those with adequate facilities.
Therefore, it has been severely criticized by the international community, he said at a discussion held yesterday to look into the progress of the project to rehabilitate the Welikada prison premises on a 200 acre land in Millewa, Horana.
He says that at present there are only 11,000 detainees in the prison system in the country.
Therefore, the establishment of the Welikada Prison in Borella at Millewa is a must, he said.
