Asiri Central Hospital has reached a historic milestone by successfully performing its first paediatric cardiothoracic surgery, launching a new chapter in its mission to deliver advanced heart care. On January 25th, Dr. M.S. Mugunthan performed an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) repair on a young patient, supported by Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Asitha Dassanayake and the dedicated ICU team.

The life-saving procedure, funded by the government’s Suraksha Student Insurance Scheme, provided hope for a child previously on the long waiting list at Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH). The grateful parents praised Asiri Health’s timely intervention, calling it a shining example of social responsibility.
Dr. Mugunthan highlighted the programme’s potential to ease the burden on the public healthcare system by offering quicker access to essential surgeries. With expert support from Asiri’s experienced staff, the surgery was carried out seamlessly, demonstrating the hospital’s readiness to expand into paediatric heart care.

Asiri Health Group CEO Dr. Manjula Karunaratne stated, “This collaboration with the public sector reflects our commitment to accessible, world-class healthcare.” Director of Operations Mr. Nihal Ratnayake and Group Head of Business Development Mr. Bathiya Jayasinghe echoed this, noting the impact of strong public-private partnerships in transforming lives.
This landmark operation not only showcases clinical excellence but also underscores Asiri Central Hospital’s ongoing dedication to innovation, compassion, and community care.
