The Colombo Crimes Division arrested the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s Colombo district organizer Mr. Saman Wijesundara at his home in Kudabuthgamuwa.
It is suspected in connection with an incident in which the former chairman of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council and Kotte seat organizer of Sri Lanka Freedom Party Mr. Janaka Ranawaka was threatened with death by a foreign number and demanded a ransom of 05 crore rupees.
Mr. Janaka Ranawaka has received unknown calls from two telephone numbers used in Dubai and Pakistan from time to time since about a week ago, and a person has started threatening him with an amount of 05 crore rupees.
The caller said that if the money is not given, he will be killed and the family members will be harassed.
The person who made the threats posed as an underworld criminal.
Mr. Janaka Ranawaka has filed a complaint to the Mirihana Police Station in this regard.
On the advice of Acting Inspector General of Police Mr. Deshbandu Tennakoon, the investigation of the complaint was handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division and within three days, the information about the network involved in threatening to demand ransom was disclosed.
It has been found that Mr. Saman Wijesundara has threatened Mr. Janaka Ranawaka based on a land dispute and demanded ransom through his cousin who is abroad.
