    “Opposition support the Sports Minister to Kick Out the Corrupt Cricket Board” – Sajith

    The debate has started today (09) in the parliament according to the resolution proposed jointly by the ruling party and the opposition for the removal of the chairman and the officials of the Sri Lanka Cricket.

    The leader of the opposition proposed here to remove the corrupt officials who are ruining the cricket game in Sri Lanka, suspend the standing orders and adopt a resolution based on the agreement of all the members.

    Mr. Sajith Premadasa also emphasized that he will give his full support to the Sports Minister to remove the current corrupt cricket officials.

    20 opposition MPs, including Samagi Jana Balawega, stood up demanding that the proposal be debated.

    The opposition leader proposed to debate and pass the resolution tomorrow.

    The resolution states, Thus, for the advancement of cricket in Sri Lanka, the current corrupt board of officials including the president of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board should be removed immediately, and a new legal system should be passed through an act to maintain the cricket administration transparently without corruption.

    The “Chitrasiri Committee Report” prepared for the introduction of a new constitution for the Sri Lanka Cricket Association was officially handed over yesterday (08) by President’s Secretary Mr. Saman Ekanayake to President’s Attorney Mr. Ali Sabri, Chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee appointed to look into the matter of cricket on the instructions of President Ranil Wickramasinghe.

    President Ranil Wickramasinghe is of the opinion that since the crisis that has arisen in connection with cricket, the most popular sport in Sri Lanka, is very complex and deep, it cannot be resolved by merely appointing an inter-controlling committee, and considering the progress of the sport, it is essential to provide a permanent substantive solution.

    The report of the committee headed by retired Supreme Court Judge KT Chitrasiri was handed over to the President last month, but it was planned to be submitted to Parliament after the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the 2024 budget.

    But in view of the current situation, President Ranil Wickramasinghe has decided to submit the proposed new draft constitution to the Cabinet sub-committee and bring it to the attention of the Parliament.

    Accordingly, it is scheduled to be tabled and discussed by the ruling party in the debate held in Parliament today (09).

    Through this proposed new draft constitution, it has been proposed to completely change the method of appointing the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and its composition, administration and management have also been revised.

    According to the proposed new constitution, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board has been proposed to be governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 18 members appointed for a period of 4 years.

    It has been proposed to give the board of directors the powers to take policy decisions and to give the powers to implement those decisions to a director general appointed by the board of directors.

    8 members of the board of directors are nominated directors and the power to recommend them has been assigned to an expert committee consisting of 06 members.

    The Committee shall consist of the Chairman of the National Sports Council, the Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka or an officer nominated by him, the Chairman of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka or an officer nominated by him, the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka or an officer nominated by him, the Chairman of the Institute of Directors of Sri Lanka or an officer nominated by him, the Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants Sri Lanka (CIMA Sri Lanka) or nominated by him.

    The other 10 board members are appointed through official election. It is proposed to elect 5 directors representing the cricket clubs, 1 representing the Players’ Association, 1 representing the Schools Cricket Association, 1 representing the Women’s Cricket Association, 1 representing the Umpires’ Association and 1 representing the Coaches’ Association. .

    It has also been proposed to appoint 10 committees covering various fields of cricket to carry out their duties formally.

    These are Cricket Committee, Audit Committee, Stakeholder Transaction Committee, Nomination Committee, Selection Committee, Tournament Committee, Facility Development Committee, Tour Committee, Rules – Arbitration – and Disciplinary Committee, Investment Committee, Anti-Doping and Anti-Corruption Committee and Remuneration Committee.
