A Floating Power Plant to Samanala Wewa Lake

The government has decided to call proposals from project proponents interested in constructing a floating solar power plant in Samanala Lake Reservoir.

It has been identified that approximately 100 hectares of water surface space in the Samanala Lake Reservoir under the Ceylon Electricity Board can be used to build a floating solar power plant of 150-200 megawatts.

The generation of solar energy on the surface of reservoirs by constructing floating solar power plants has been recognized as an ideal option for countries with limited land.

Accordingly, the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority have recognized that there is great potential to implement surface solar energy generation projects in the reservoirs.

The Minister of Power and Energy had submitted this proposal to the Council of Ministers to invite proposals following the applicable national procurement guidelines for the implementation of related infrastructure projects.
