Sri Lanka is set to bolster its maritime security with the acquisition of two modern aircraft, according to Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, the Air Force Commander. He revealed that a Beach King 360 ER model aircraft would be procured from the United States later this year, and another aircraft would be acquired from Australia in the early months of the following year, with President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s intervention facilitating the process.
Air Marshal Rajapaksa made these announcements during his visit to Kandy on the occasion of an annual charity event organized by the Sri Lanka Air Force at the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Speaking to the media, he highlighted the significance of these aircraft in enhancing Sri Lanka’s maritime security.
Furthermore, the Air Force Commander disclosed plans for the acquisition of the Dornier 228 special vessel from the Indian Navy, which will play a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s maritime defense. The vessel will aid in preventing illegal activities in the ocean region, including piracy, drug transportation, and human trafficking.
Emphasizing the importance of international collaboration, Air Marshal Rajapaksa mentioned a special conference held with the participation of security forces from various countries. This collaborative effort will not only enhance Sri Lanka’s maritime security but also impact neighboring nations directly. The Sri Lanka Air Force will conduct aerial surveillance of the sea area, providing crucial data and information to the Sri Lanka Navy. These joint operations will involve coordinated efforts from the Sri Lanka Air Force, Navy, Army, and Special Task Force, ensuring comprehensive maritime surveillance and security.
