Heavy rains in Kandy have led to the collapse of a section of the embankment near the moat in front of the historic King’s Palace adjacent to the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic).
This collapse has not only endangered the embankment but also poses a risk to the palace itself. Notably, a similar incident occurred about three years ago in front of the Vishnu Temple, which was subsequently repaired by the Irrigation Department two months ago. Unfortunately, another part of the embankment collapsed six months ago.
Given the critical situation, the Department of Archaeology has urgently notified the Irrigation Department to initiate immediate restoration efforts. A team of officials conducted an on-site inspection today, and further action will be taken to address the necessary reforms promptly.
