In a recent incident, a person on a motorcycle launched a grenade attack at the Cheeky Monkey restaurant, a prominent tourist spot located in the Midigama police jurisdiction. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage were reported in the attack.
The restaurant, operated by two brothers, has been the target of previous violent incidents. In March of the previous year, the younger brother, Pasidu Sandaruwan, was shot near the restaurant and succumbed to his injuries the following day. Prior to this, the elder brother narrowly escaped a shooting incident on December 21, 2021.
The motive behind the attacks is suspected to be related to the restaurant’s popularity among foreigners. Supporters of a local figure known as Harak Kata are believed to be involved, particularly in the murder of Pasidu Sandaruwan. One of Harak Kata’s key associates, Kudu Chuti, allegedly orchestrated the killing and is currently residing in Dubai. While two suspects linked to the murder have been apprehended, the restaurant continues to face threats, indicating ongoing tensions in the area.
