“The problem in Udawalawa got worse because the government did not release water when requested”

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says that if the government had released water when Udawalawa farmers requested water a week ago, the aggravated problem would have been solved to a large extent, but the cabinet decided to save water for electricity and give compensation to the farmers instead of water.

But the opposition leader says that the decision to release the water after the water has completely receded shows that the government is acting without proper management and that the central nervous system of the government has been disabled.

The opposition leader said this today (8) in the Parliament raising his voice regarding the water rights of Udawalawa farmers.

Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, says that there are two hundred and seventeen thousand acre feet in the Udawalawa reservoir and when the farmers asked for water last days, it was 2000 acre feet, but now it has decreased to 918 acre feet.

It is said that nearly 30,000 families are cultivating paddy, banana, sugarcane and maize in 62,000 acres, which supplies water to 7 units such as the left bank and the right bank.

Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the opposition leader, said here that the government which did not form selection committees for excreta fertilizers is trying to form selection committees against the media which exposed the hardships of the farmers who are crying without water, to the country.
