A second year student of Peradeniya University Faculty of Allied Health Sciences Faculty tried to commit suicide yesterday by hanging himself from the fan of the student dormitory.
He was rescued by other students and admitted to Peradeniya Hospital for treatment.
This student is a 25-year-old resident of Mandarmura, Batticaloa.
The Peradeniya Police have gone to the hospital to get a statement from him. The student said he went to the Criminal Investigation Department yesterday (07) as per their summons, where the officers assaulted him and took the mobile phone for investigation. The student told the Peradeniya police that the officials threatened him that he would not be given the opportunity to study at the university and that they would cancel his studentship. The student has further stated that he decided to commit suicide based on that situation.
A senior officer of the Peradeniya Police said that the higher police officers will be informed about the student’s statement.
