New RORO yard for Hambantota port

With the increase in RORO ships arriving at the Hambantota International Port, the port has taken steps to build a new RoRo yard to park reloaded vehicles.

Currently, nine major shipping companies are served by the RORO transhipment yard, which has the capacity to accommodate around 28,000 vehicle units. The Management of Hambantota International Port stated that the new yard is expected to be completed soon as several shipping companies will be transshipping large volumes of RORO through Hambantota International in the coming months.

Hambantota International Port Group has already made an investment of 8 million US dollars to build a 68,000 square meter RORO yard by expanding the parking space. The facility, which will be completed in the next 7 months, will be constructed at a distance of 55 meters from the port berth.

“Due to our reliability, safety standards, fast operations, and strategic location, Hambantota International Port is becoming an attractive RORO transshipment destination. As the global economy gradually improves, we expect to increase our volumes further. Also, it is our expectation to continue making investments in areas of strategic importance according to global standards, gaining the trust of our customers,” says Tissa Wickramasinghe, Chief Operating Officer of Hambantota International Port.

By May 2023, the port has handled over 271,000 RORO units and the Hambantota Port Authority plans to achieve a significant increase in that number by the end of the year.
