A hunter who hunted animals in Wilpattu with a T-56 weapon belonging to the police was arrested yesterday by the wildlife officers.
The hunter was arrested while butchering a deer that had been shot and killed in the forest.
At that time, a T-56 type weapon and an ammunition bag containing 22 rounds of ammunition were also taken into custody by the wildlife officials.
The suspect has said during questioning that the firearm was given to him by a police constable working in Thanthirimale Police. Investigations have revealed that this firearm belongs to the Thanthirimale police armory.
