Another custom’s container inspection center at Kerawalapitiya

The government has taken steps to build another container inspection center for Sri Lanka Customs near the Kerawalapitiya Interchange.

The proposal made by Hon. Minister of Finance to allocate a portion of 19 acres and 9.26 perches of land belonging to the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation in that area and the relevant land for that purpose and to take steps to establish the proposed container inspection center was approved by the Cabinet.

Sri Lanka Customs is currently inspecting containers at 08 privately-owned yards in the Orugodawanathna and Grandpass areas.

Due to the limited space and facilities available in those yards, the customs officers, as well as the clients who come to obtain services, have to face difficulties.

Also, there is heavy traffic congestion in the Colombo area when transporting containers to these yards.

In view of this, a feasibility study has been conducted under the help of the Asian Development Bank Technical Council to identify the most suitable location among the alternative locations of Bloemendal, Peliyagoda and Kerawalapitiya.

Accordingly, it has been identified as the most suitable location to set up the proposed testing center on a 19-acre and 9.26 perches plot of land belonging to the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation near the Kerawalapitiya Interchange.
