Sri Lanka is among the countries with the highest number of asthma patients in the world, according to the Sri Lankan Association of Respiratory Disease Specialists.

Its chairman Dr. Neranjan Dissanayake said that between 10% and 15% of the country’s population suffers from asthma.

He said that children, young women and adults face a lot of mental and physical difficulties due to asthma.

He points out that about 95% of asthma patients can be controlled with simple, very cheap, highly effective medicine.

Dr. Neranjan Dissanayake, a specialist, said that sometimes, even death can occur due to not receiving proper treatment.

However, unfortunately, around 500,000 people worldwide die from asthma each year.

World Asthma Day is on May 7.

Awareness programs have been organized by the Association of Respiratory Disease Specialists.
