The Appointment of the New Inspector General is Illegal – Sajith

0

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says that President Ranil Wickramasinghe has appointed Mr. Deshbandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police without the approval of the Constitutional Council.

He says that 4 votes in favor of this appointment, 2 votes against and 2 abstained from participating in this appointment.

Mr. Sajith Premadasa said that at least 5 votes are needed to confirm the decision.

Mr. Sajith Premadasa points out that in the case of a tie, the speaker should have cast a vote, but 4/2 is not such a case.

Thus, the opposition leader has accused that the constitution was blatantly violated for the second time and it is shameful.

Under Article 41c of the Constitution, the appointment of the Inspector General of Police is made after the recommendation made by the President is approved by the Constituent Council.

Any obstruction to the President in performing his constitutional role is a violation of the Constitution. If the President exercises his powers contrary to the Constitution, the remedies available for that are provided in the Constitution itself.

Below is an explanation previously issued by the President’s Office.
