According to the Department of Census and Statistics, 20.2% of micro, small and medium businesses in Sri Lanka have been permanently or temporarily closed by the middle of last year.

According to a survey conducted by the department, it has been revealed that this number has been reduced by the number of 1.3 million micro, small and medium businesses that were active in Sri Lanka at the end of 2018.

By May 2023, only 79.8% of the 1.3 million micro, small and medium-scale businesses at the end of 2018 have been active in Sri Lanka.

Although it is difficult to obtain more information from businesses that are temporarily or permanently closed, the survey asked about the year they were closed.

An establishment-level survey was conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics from March to June 2023 to gauge the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crisis on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

The survey covered micro, small and medium scale non-agricultural business establishments.

The Department of Census and Statistics also says that it includes all sectors of industry, trade and services.
