With effect from February 1, the Department of Motor Transport (DMT) has made it mandatory to have Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) while availing services related to vehicle registration and transfer.

The Motor Transport Department stated that ownership or registration of vehicles cannot be done without TIN.

If those services are required, the department requests people to get TIN number as soon as possible.

The department also requested people not to waste time by coming to the department without TIN number.

Meanwhile, the Inland Revenue Department says that registering with the Inland Revenue Department and obtaining a Tax Number (TIN) can be done online as well as by visiting the Inland Revenue Department.

The application for obtaining this tax number can also be downloaded from the website of the Inland Revenue Department and a copy can be printed.

Therefore, there is no need to go to the Inland Revenue Department to get the application. It is available online from the departmental website.

The application for a tax number can be submitted to the Inland Revenue Department by visiting the Inland Revenue Department’s website www.ird.gov.lk and following the guidelines.

After reviewing the request, a certificate stating the Tax Payer Identification Number (TIN) and a One Time Password (OTP) will be sent to the email address provided by the concerned person, the Inland Revenue Department said.

While visiting the Inland Revenue Department and obtaining the tax number, a registration application for the same can be completed and submitted to the Primary Registration Section on the 2nd floor of the Inland Revenue Department’s main office or to any local office of the Inland Revenue Department.

In order to get the tax number online i.e. through the e-service, both sides of the national identity card should be scanned and a PDF copy should be uploaded.

The Department of Inland Revenue also says that if there is a difference between the address on the National Identity Card and the current residential address, a copy of an acceptable document should be uploaded to prove it.

From January 01, 2024, the government has made it mandatory for everyone above 18 to obtain a tax number.

Just by taking this number, one is not liable to pay tax, which should be paid only if one earns more than 12 lakh rupees annually.
