The committee appointed on the basis of the Cabinet paper sent to the Cabinet by the Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment, Mr. Manusha Nanayakkara, met today (01) to prepare a comprehensive policy on the social security of the entire workforce, including both formal and informal sectors.
This committee should submit the proposal regarding a comprehensive social security system to the cabinet within a period of three months.
The minister also presented facts regarding the fact that workers in the informal sector, who represent about 60 percent of the country’s workforce, are not included in any social security system.
The minister explained here that millions of people work in the informal sector as well as the people working in the formal sector and a special program called “Garu Saru” has been started to give dignity and respect to their labour.
This committee was appointed by the President’s Secretary Mr. Saman Ekanayake based on the Cabinet paper sent to the Cabinet by the Minister.
