Norochcholai Police yesterday (03) arrested four Army personnel who were on duty at the Kallar Camp in Serunuwara for abducting in a van and assaulting a resident of Paniadiya, Norochcholai.

A Captain, a Corporal and two Lance Corporals were among those arrested, said Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana.

This abduction took place on the night of the 29th June. Mary Darshani, the wife of the abducted man, had lodged a complaint with the Norochcholai Police. She had told the police that her husband had been abducted by a group of people dressed in army uniforms.

Hours after the abduction, the van was found abandoned near the railway track on the Puttalam Outer Ring Road. Inside were several military uniforms and a military helmet. A wallet with a national identity card and a driver’s license was also found. During the investigation, the police revealed that the abduction was carried out by a group of soldiers and that it was due to a personal grievance. Mr. Rohana said that the Army Police had arrested them and handed them over to the police after informing the Army authorities about them.

The abducted Raja Sri Kantha (38) was taken to the Ilanthadiya beach in Norochcholai and assaulted, police said. It is said that a group of villagers chased the van and thus army people had abandoned the van and fled.

Police investigations have revealed that the abduction and assault was carried out by a man who allegedly sent a text message to the mobile phone of the wife of a senior Army officer.
