Heavy Rain Brought by Trade Winds From Today

0

The Department of Meteorology says that from today (17) to the 20th, an increase in the current rain conditions in the island is expected.

Accordingly, rain or thundershowers will occur in most parts of the island after 2.00 pm and some places in Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces may experience heavy rains of more than 100mm.

The formation of the intertropical convergence zone, where the winds coming from the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere, have affected this heavy rain situation.

These winds are also known as Trade Winds because in the past trade ships were transported using these winds which blow steadily from the Northern Hemisphere to the South and from the Southern Hemisphere to the North.

Sri Lanka is located in the convergence zone of these winds coming from both sides, so the converging winds move up and form rain clouds and affect the occurrence of heavy rains in the island.

Although this intertropical convergence zone has been affecting the island’s weather for the past few days, since it has stabilized from today, the rains will increase, Mr. Janaka Kumara, the meteorologist on duty, told NewsWave.lk.

Rain is also possible in the coastal areas of Western, Southern and Eastern provinces and Mannar and Jaffna districts in the morning.

People were asked to take necessary measures to reduce the dangers caused by temporary strong winds and lightning that may occur with thunderstorms.
