“IMF assistance delayed by 6 weeks because one person opposed increasing the electricity bill”

1

President Ranil Wickramasinghe says that due to one person’s objection to the increase in the electricity bill, the assistance of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was delayed by 6 weeks.

The President said that the International Monetary Fund had given the government 15 things to complete in order to get the loan support and that the electricity bill, which was the last condition, had to be completed.

But the President said that this process was delayed by one person standing against it, but later the electricity bill was increased, and the 15 related tasks were completed.

He stressed that if the IMF loan is not received, we will have to live with a 12-hour power cut.

The President says in Kandy that if there are alternative proposals to the government’s program to build the economy, he is ready to present them to the International Monetary Fund.

President Ranil Wickramasinghe said that there must be a proper plan to build a strong economy in the country, and due to the economic program carried out by the current government, the economic difficulties that existed in the past few months have been somewhat reduced.

The President mentioned that there is no other institution in the world except the International Monetary Fund to support a country that has collapsed like this and said that if there are alternative proposals to the government’s program for building the economy, he is ready to provide the opportunity to submit them to the International Monetary Fund.

President Ranil Wickramasinghe mentioned this while attending a meeting with businessmen and lawyers of the Kandy district yesterday (20) afternoon at the Presidential Palace in Kandy.

The President emphasized that he did not accept the responsibility of the presidency without knowing about these challenges and that he will not stop the program of building the country’s economy no matter what the obstacles are.
