Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Anura Kumara Dissanayake says that he is ready to accept responsibility if other parties support the appointment of an interim government under the leadership of the Jathika Jana Balawegaya.

The party has also put forward a series of short-term proposals by Jathika Jana Balawegaya to end the current political crisis and bring political stability to the country.

The proposals are as follows.

Incumbent President Gotabhaya Rajapaksha must step down immediately.

In the absence of a current Prime Minister, the Speaker should act as the caretaker President.

As the present government and the composition of the present parliament no longer represent the people’s mandate, and the people’s confidence in the government has been shattered and the people will not accept any change made in the present parliament, a new government should be formed within six months with a new mandate. As a temporary control structure for the time being;

(A) As the Jathika Jana Balawegaya is ready to take up the responsibility of taking the country on a new path by ending the current political crisis and anarchy, with the Jathika Jana Balawegaya baring the primary responsibility, give the Jathika Jana Balawegaya the necessary space to elect an interim government through Parliament without hindrance,

(B) If not, the formation of an interim government in the present Parliament for a short period of time. In that case, the Jathika Jana Balawegaya members will not be part of it but will be supported by the Opposition.

The interim government, which will be elected in either of the above ways, must perform the following functions:

I. The 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which limits the power of the Presidency and limits the term of office of the current President, should be introduced and passed in Parliament immediately.

II. Steps must be taken to provide the necessary relief to alleviate the severe economic pressures currently facing the people.

III. An amendment to the Constitution to abolish the executive presidency must be presented to Parliament and approved.

IV. The referendum should be held simultaneously with the general election and the constitutional amendment to abolish the current executive presidency so that a new government can be established within six months of forming the caretaker government.

V. An Oversight Board should be appointed to oversee the activities of the Provisional Government as agreed. It should consist of people including trade union representatives involved in the current people’s struggle, representatives from the struggle, religious leaders, representatives of various professional organizations and civil society organizations.
