Health services are on the verge of collapse – GMOA

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) says that there is a severe shortage of medicines and medical equipment in almost all hospitals today.

Dr. Sonal Fernando, Secretary of the Government Medical Officers ‘Association (GMOA) said that due to severe shortages of medicines and medical equipment, power cuts, and fuel shortages, hospitals’ essential patient care services have been disrupted and the entire healthcare system will be disrupted in the future.

He also said that the health service is collapsing due to not giving priority to the free health service which is maintained by the people’s tax money.

Dr. Fernando said that the government has an inalienable responsibility to ensure the right to life and health of the people and that the present government and the Ministry of Health have failed to uphold that fundamental right.

He said the supply of medicines and equipment was the sole responsibility of the government and the Ministry of Health, but that patient care services had almost completely collapsed due to the economic crisis caused by poor financial management.
