Tea production declines from 20% – Lowest since 2009

Sri Lanka’s tea production fell from 20% in February, according to data from the Sri Lanka Tea Board.

According to the Asian brokerage firm, it is the lowest monthly tea production since February 2009, where it recorded 12.8 million kilograms.

The ban on chemical fertilizers, which came into effect last April, is being considered as the main cause for the situation.

Although the ban on the tea industry was lifted last October, the import of fertilizer has been a problem for tea growers due to the dollar shortage.

Prior to the fertilizer ban, Sri Lanka earned about $ 1.3 billion annually from tea exports.

The latest challenge to the Sri Lankan tea industry is the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as exports about 10 percent of Sri Lanka’s tea production to Russia and Ukraine, who are a few of the leading buyers of Sri Lankan tea.
