The number of registered political parties in the country has increased to 79 and three new political parties have been registered as recognized political parties by the Elections Commission.
The Election Commission states that the Tamil Makkal Kuttani, (Nawa Lanka Nidahas Pakshaya) – the New Lanka Freedom Party, and the (Demala Pragathishili Sandhanaya) – Tamil Progressive Alliance have been registered as the new political parties for the year 2021.
The Tamil Makkal Kuttani Party is active under the leadership of former Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswaran, the new Lanka Freedom Party under the leadership of Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama, and the Tamil Progressive Alliance under the leadership of Mano Ganeshan.
