Azad Sally was acquitted of all charges

Azad Sally, the former Governor of the Western Province, who was remanded by the CID on the advice of the Attorney General on charges of inciting ethnic and religious disunity and attempting to disrupt reconciliation was acquitted of all charges by Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja today.

Former Governor Azad Sally was arrested by CID on March 16 on instructions of the attorney general on the basis of there was sufficient evidence to suggest that he had committed an offense under the Penal Code and the Prevention of Terrorism Act, as well as a violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, No. 56 of 2007 during a statement made at a press conference on March 9.

He was remanded in custody for several months by the CID and produced before the court several times and continued investigations. He was remanded under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Convention on Civil and Political Rights and the indictment was filed in the High Court.
