Army Commander Shavendra Silva receives grand honors in Russia

The Chief of Defense Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva, who is on a visit to Russia, received the grand honors in Russia on Monday (25).

This is the highest recognition given to a Sri Lankan military leader in Russia.

Following the Russian ground operations parade, General Shavendra Silva laid a wreath at the ‘Tomb of the Unknown Soldier’ at the Alexandrovsky Garden of Kremlin in Moscow.

Commander Shavendra Silva is accompanied by Commander-in-Chief, Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Operations of the Russian Federation, General Oleg Salyukov, at the invitation of the Russian Defense Ministry.

Welcoming General Shavendra Silva in a grand military march past consisting of four divisions and a military band, Russia played the national anthems of the two countries at the drill, reflecting the friendship between the two countries.

After commemorating the heroic war heroes of the Russian Army, General Shavendra Silva visited the Arms Museum in Moscow.

During General Shavendra Silva’s visit to Russia, he will also meet the Commander at the Higher Combined Arms Command School in Moscow Major General Roman Binyukov, Commander of the 4th Guards Tank Division at Naro-Fominsk area and the Commander of the Military Artillery Academy at Mikhailovskaya.

The Chief of Defense Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Army General Shavendra Silva was invited by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Operations Forces, General Oleg Salyukov, to visit Russia during his visit to Sri Lanka in February 2020.

But the invitation was later postponed by General Shavendra Silva due to his role as the head of the National Action Center for the Prevention of the spread of Covid-19.
