Covid Act is now in Force

The Secretary-General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake has issued a statement stating that the 2019 Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19) (Temporary Provisions) Bill has been certified by Speaker Mahinda Yapa.

The bill was passed in Parliament without a vote on August 17.

The purpose is to provide for the provision in cases where individuals have not been able to perform certain acts prescribed by law due to the Covid-19 condition within the stipulated time frame.It also aims to provide for the appointment of alternative courts in cases where a court is unable to proceed due to the Covid situation.

And the conduct of court proceedings using telecommunication technology to facilitate the control of Kovid situations

The Act will also provide temporary provisions and relief to the parties to certain agreements which have not been able to fulfill their contractual obligations due to the covid situation including the matters relating thereto

Accordingly, the 2019 Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19) (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 17 of 2021 came into force on the 23rd of this month.
