The Government has decided to facilitate the export of gems online.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting yesterday after considering exporters’ request for permission to export gems online as aviation services have been disrupted due to the current Covid epidemic around the world.
The demand for gems in the international gem market has dropped significantly.
Therefore, the Gem Industry Authority has requested the National Gem and Jewellery Authority to provide some relief for the charges levied on gem exports.
Accordingly, Orders have been issued by the Gazette Notification No. 5532/86 of 18 June 2021 under the National Gem and Jewellery Issue Act No. 50 of 1993 to revise the relevant tariffs and to facilitate the export of gems and jewellery online. The proposal made by Hon. Minister of Industry, to proceed with the related activities, was approved by the Cabinet.
