Cabinet approval has been granted to make legal amendments to allow foreign divorce, annulment or judicial separation to take place in the country.
The statement issued by the Cabinet Office in this regard is as follows.
Sri Lankans who are married in Sri Lanka and then reside abroad have to face difficulties due to the non-acceptance of marriage rulings in Sri Lanka obtained by foreign countries. In order to comply with such a decision in Sri Lanka, they will again have to file for divorce in this country too. Therefore, the Family Law Advisory Committee appointed by the Minister of Justice has recommended that legal provisions be made to accept divorce, annulment of marriages and judicial separation which take place abroad. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Minister of Justice, to proceed with the relevant activities, was approved by the Cabinet.
