Mayor of Kotte Municipal Council Mr. I. M. V. Premalal was admitted to a private hospital in Narahenpita after being hit by a stick in the Ambalama area in Pita Kotte.
He was assaulted yesterday and had four stitches on his head, according to the Mirihana Police.
The incident had taken place when the mayor had gone with his son and the driver to buy bread at a bakery in the Ambalama area. Police say that the Mayor’s driver had gone to the bakery after blocking the by-road leading to the bakery. A lorry had arrived at the bakery at that time and the driver of the lorry had blown the horn for a while and later the mayor’s vehicle had been removed from the road, police said. After the lorry had gone to the bakery, the mayor got out of the vehicle and went to the bakery to find the driver of the lorry and had an argument with him and his assistant.
The driver and his assistant have been arrested in connection with the attack. The two have been remanded until an identification parade is produced in court. Police say the mayor’s condition is not serious.
