Despite being in power for six months, the government is still delaying the implementation of the casino tax, said Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Dr. Harsha de Silva in Parliament today (20).
He criticized the government for failing to properly regulate and tax casinos, highlighting that while online casinos are widespread, no effective tax collection measures have been implemented.
De Silva presented financial data showing the revenue generated from casino taxes in recent years, arguing that proper regulation could significantly increase tax income. He also questioned why the government has not taken action despite ongoing discussions.
Meanwhile, Minister Bimal Ratnayake stated that the chairmanship of the parliamentary finance committee is assigned to the opposition based on standing orders, but emphasized that the chairman must act responsibly. He proposed reconsidering this rule if necessary.
De Silva further commented that previous governments also faced similar situations and that necessary action should be taken without political influence.
