President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has stated that he is opposed to running private universities for business purposes only.
He points out that since it is not possible to run 100% government universities, the income earned by private universities should be set aside for the promotion of education itself.
The President said that those who are campaigning against education reforms should present a modern education system and not advocate for political motives.
The majority of graduates seek government employment. However, the President said that the responsibility of a government should not be to provide jobs but to create a comprehensive economic environment that creates jobs.
The president said he hopes the City University program will eventually create a person with the knowledge to be directly involved in the economy or self-employed.
The President also stressed the need to take steps to expedite the implementation of the City University Program throughout the island starting from Kegalle.
President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa stated this during the launching ceremony the official website (www.cu.ac.lk) on the occasion of “World Youth Skills Day Celebration – 2021” at the Presidential Secretariat this morning.
