The representatives of four major three-wheeler drivers’ associations in the country say that they will give their full support to the independent candidate President Ranil Wickramasinghe in the upcoming presidential election.
The All Ceylon Three-wheeler Drivers Trade Union, National Taxi App Three-wheeler Professionals Union, United Passenger Transport Service Professionals Association, and Western Provincial Three-wheeler Drivers and Owners Cooperative Society are united to support the President.
About a thousand representatives representing those associations gathered at the Colombo Galle Face grounds yesterday (04) and the President, who came among them, had a friendly meeting with the group following their request to meet President Ranil Wickramasinghe.
He thanked President Ranil Wickramasinghe for providing solutions within 24 hours to the problem of regulation of the tuk-tuk industry, which had not been solved under four executive presidents for 25 years.
President Ranil Wickramasinghe said that the three-wheeler drivers were unable to work last season and were stuck in fuel queues for days and that they did not want to face such a situation again.
President Ranil Wickramasinghe, who spoke on the occasion, mentioned that the government has taken steps to introduce a contributory pension and social security for three-wheeler drivers from the year 2025.
The President also mentioned that state banks and private banks will provide the opportunity to restructure the debt repayments of the three-wheeler drivers who are suffering from debt in the wake of the economic crisis.
