The Election Commissioner General Mr. Saman Sri Ratnayake says that arrangements will be made to hold the local government polls after the presidential election.
The local government polls were scheduled to be held on March 9 last year.
Commenting on the Supreme Court’s order to the Election Commission to hold the poll as soon as possible, he said that the priority at this time is the presidential election.
The Supreme Court ruled yesterday (22) that the President and the members of the then Election Commission violated basic human rights by not holding the local government polls that were scheduled to be held on March 09 last year.
Accordingly, the Supreme Court ordered the Election Commission to take necessary steps to conduct the local government polls as soon as possible.
