Excise Commissioner General MJ Gunasiri says that due to the increase in price, the sale of alcohol has decreased by 40% and the temptation of consumers to use illegal alcohol has increased.
Therefore, he has requested the liquor manufacturers to reduce the price of a bottle of liquor by one hundred rupees.
It was during a special meeting held yesterday (1) at the Excise Department with alcohol producers.
The Commissioner General of Excise points out that there is a possibility of reducing the price of alcohol as the price of a liter of ethanol has decreased to between 600-700 rupees.
But liquor manufacturers have pointed out that they are unable to reduce prices due to excise duty and taxes imposed on liquor manufacturing ingredients.
