    Preparations for an elephant census

The Wildlife Department has taken steps to conduct a nationwide elephant census next month.

The department said that it will be done on August 19 and 20.

For that, 4500 multi-tasking officers attached to the Wildlife Department have been deployed.

Apart from this, the relevant census is being conducted with the participation of all wildlife officers as well as army and police officers.

The Wildlife Department also stated that they have started the training of officials for the census.

The last census of wild elephants in Sri Lanka was done in 2011.

According to that report, the number of wild elephants in this country is 5878.
