Cabinet Spokesman, Minister of Mass Media and Information Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella stated that clear regulation is needed regarding websites that spread false news.

The Minister made this observation addressing a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today (13).

The Minister said that the provisions of the law should be fully implemented in the case of the abuse of a 15-year-old girl and that the process is being carried out properly at present.

He added that some websites were spreading false news using the names of doctors not involved in the incident.

The Minister of Mass Media and Information stated that such false news websites need to be regulated to protect the people of this country as such incidents can destroy families and even damage the self-esteem of the people.

The Minister said that all media channels are the property of the people and not anyone’s private property and if there is a problem, legal advice will be sought and legal action will be taken.

The Minister said that as the Minister of Media, if we are talking about using the property of the people to destroy the peace of the country, he would not hesitate to act within the framework of the law in such cases where there is talk of creating disunity among the nations, and that it was his responsibility and duty to act within the framework of the law and respect the Constitution.
